Reese-Mogg has a right to hide his heirlooms

Last month’s article by Tony Staunton (“What a cynical political game they are playing”, August 27) reaffirms the Marxist opinion that the “the most fundamental tension in society is between social classes”. This belief implies that the class war is not only eternal and just, but necessary. It also makes it obvious that the left started the current culture war about a hundred years before I was born.

As usual, Mr Staunton’s article is full of accusations and emotional words like “inequality, injustice, oppressed, privileges, entitlements, criminal, plunder, abuse, far-right, racist, creeps, extortion, ‘protection rackets’ and ‘confidence tricksters'”, but some things are clear:

Socialists like Mr Staunton are never going to admit that Jacob Rees-Mogg has a right to hide his jewel-encrusted, gold-plated, family heirlooms in the Cayman Islands to avoid the risk of them being confiscated by a potentially tyrannical government which honestly believes that the wealth of the nation belongs to the government;

Socialists in general, as a group, are never going to admit that the wealth of the British people, and the employment opportunities created by that wealth, belong to the British people, not to foreigners who break our laws.

I contend that society prospers when the rich and the poor co-operate with each other rather than competing to signal their virtue.

Questions on article over Grenfell Disaster

We live in a society which has already moved from democracy to tyranny without actually noticing, so it is remarkably difficult to respond to Tony Staunton’s article (“We must never forget the Grenfell disaster”, September 10th).

Marc Houlton (“Is Starmer’s Labour destroying democracy”, September 16th) clearly recognises that there is a problem, but has failed to recognise either its magnitude or its cause; which is socialist ideology.

Getting back to Mr Staunton’s article, I have a few questions for everybody who agrees with Mr Staunton.

What makes you think that the government can keep anybody safe from everything all the time by passing more laws and punishing people more and more severely for every act of carelessness or non-compliance?

Do you really believe that conservatives are trying to “put you down” just because we call you ‘woke’ every time you say that conservatives are racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, islamophobic bigots?

The power of the House of Commons is already absolute. Neither the Monarchy nor the House of Lords could stop the Government if it decided to legalise euthanasia tomorrow. Doesn’t that bother you at all?
